CTY continues to welcome qualified Czech and Slovak students to CTY programsArchive >>
"Since 2010, nearly 1,000 students benefited from CTY courses with excellent results. CTY will continue to welcome qualified CTM students to CTY programs. We look forward to continued cooperation and future joint efforts."
Six years ago the American Fund for Czech and Slovak Leadership Studies (AFCSLS) came to the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) for help in providing rigorous, engaging, high- quality courses for talented, motivated and hard working Czech and Slovak students 11 – 18 years of age. AFCSLS wanted to make it possible for these students to compete directly with their peers from around the world, for them a huge motivator and confidence booster.
CTY and AFCSLS have worked closely together since to raise awareness both within schools and amongst other stakeholders about the needs of high ability students. Nearly 1,000 students benefited from CTY courses with excellent results. Today, those efforts are focused around online programs offered in cooperation with Centrum pro talentovanou mladez (CTM), which is backed by AFCSLS.
Other activities have included scholarship competitions where selected applicants attended CTY Summer Programs in the US, training of instructors, and enrolling Czech and Slovak students in CTYs online courses. Trained by CTY, CTM instructors gradually assumed responsibility for teaching a range of CTY Online courses to the satisfaction of all involved.
An underlying goal of CTM and CTY was to build local capacity to run programs. Paying off handsomely by now, these efforts were generously supported by AFCSLS, as well as reduced tuition by CTY, and at one point by the Czech Ministry of Education through scholarships for Czech students.
CTY is undergoing a restructuring and review of its online programs. As that work takes place, CTY is suspending some aspects of its cooperation with AFCLS, CTM and other online organizations. We understand CTM will seek to license alternative course content and otherwise develop its own courses and learning management system.
As that work goes forward, CTY will continue to welcome qualified CTM students to CTY programs. We look forward to continued cooperation and future joint efforts.
